Apple Inc. has released an upgraded version of the AirTag smart tracking accessory, which is priced at $29 and features a longer signal transmission distance, a louder speaker, and several other improvements.

In a statement released on Monday, Apple stated that the new AirTag is equipped with an upgraded Bluetooth chip, achieving a 50% increase in tracking distance compared to the previous generation. The speaker volume has also been increased by 50%, and it includes what Apple calls a "unique new alert sound" to help users locate lost items more quickly.

Users of the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and subsequent models can now track the location of AirTags directly from their wrist for the first time.

The new AirTag is now available for sale, with the price remaining consistent with the previous generation, and a four-pack still priced at $99. Bloomberg reported last September that Apple was preparing to launch the upgraded AirTag.

Apple emphasized in its statement that, like the original product, the new AirTag is "designed specifically for tracking items and not for tracking people or pets." The device includes multiple anti-stalking protection features that can issue cross-system alerts on both iOS and Android platforms to prevent illegal tracking.

The new AirTag remains compatible with Apple's "Find My" network. This crowdsourced network leverages the Bluetooth capabilities of a vast number of Apple devices to detect the location of AirTags and relay that information back to the device owner.

Apple added that the design of the new AirTag has not changed, meaning that accessories for the original AirTag are still applicable.

The tech giant, headquartered in Cupertino, California, is also helping users recover lost items in other ways. In 2024, Apple introduced a "Share Item Location" feature, allowing AirTag users to share the location information of lost items with trusted third parties, such as airline customer service teams, to improve item recovery rates.

Other smartphone manufacturers are also entering the market with similar products. Samsung Electronics and Motorola, a subsidiary of Lenovo Group, have both launched their own branded item trackers, which also utilize "ultra-wideband" technology for precise positioning
