Tesla placing an order with Samsung seems to have had some impact on the pre-market stock price of $Taiwan Semiconductor(TSM.US), which is definitely a positive for $ASML(ASML.US). Overall, I think these are just minor fluctuations caused by small emotions. TSMC dominates the market, and it's quite normal for upstream players to try to diversify some non-top-tier orders to nurture a secondary supplier. Tesla, as a top player in the automotive supply chain, is particularly adept at such strategies.

A failure is not impossible. Remember Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888? They were reluctant to follow Apple to TSMC and stuck with Samsung. Well, the performance was terrible. If Huawei hadn't been banned, it would have been a disaster. Even so, MediaTek managed to take a big bite out of their market share.
