Report: ByteDance's 2022 revenue reached $85 billion, with overseas daily active users reaching 840 million.
ByteDance's latest secondary market valuation exceeded $200 billion, making it still one of the most valuable private technology companies in the world.
Latest data shows that ByteDance's overseas business is growing rapidly, with growth surpassing its domestic business.
On Thursday, according to The Information, citing sources close to ByteDance's financial performance, ByteDance's total revenue reached $85 billion last year, a YoY growth of 38%. In China, the revenue was $69 billion, a YoY growth of 25%, lower than the growth rates of 68%, 105%, and 150% in 2021, 2020, and 2019, respectively.
Reportedly, as of the end of 2022, ByteDance had reached 840 million daily active users outside of China, a 40% increase compared to the same period last year. In China, ByteDance had 850 million daily active users in 2022, a YoY growth of 13%.
ByteDance's overseas revenue mainly comes from TikTok, as well as other international businesses such as video games and enterprise software. The company's overseas revenue increased to $16 billion in 2022, compared to $6.5 billion in 2021 and only $1.2 billion in 2020.
Insiders told The Information that ByteDance's operating profit increased by 80% last year, reaching $18 billion, and net profit increased by 67% to approximately $15 billion. The operating profit margin was 21%, approaching Meta's 25% and Alphabet's 26%.
ByteDance's e-commerce business is one of its largest sources of revenue. According to The Information's report in January this year, Chinese consumers spent RMB 14.1 trillion (approximately $195 billion) on goods purchased through ByteDance, a 76% increase from the previous year. ByteDance earns revenue by taking a commission from e-commerce transactions, typically around 3% to 5% of the sales amount.
The Information states that ByteDance remains one of the world's most valuable private technology companies, with a recent secondary market valuation exceeding $200 billion. At the end of 2020, its last round of equity financing valued the company at $180 billion.
