The MSCI Emerging Markets Index rose 6.6% on Friday, marking its best single-day performance since 2008 and narrowing the July decline to 3.3%; South Korea's KOSPI Composite Index surged a record 18% on Friday. Analysts pointed out that Friday's rebound may be driven by short covering, as leveraged positions have not been fully cleared, suggesting volatility may persist

Emerging market stocks posted their largest gain in nearly two decades on Friday, ending a turbulent week and narrowing monthly losses. South Korea's benchmark stock index soared to a record high.

The MSCI Emerging Markets Index rose 6.6% on Friday, marking its best single-day performance since 2008 and narrowing the July decline to 3.3%. South Korea's KOSPI Composite Index surged 18% on Friday.

Florian Ielpo, Head of Macro at Lombard Odier Investment Managers, stated:

“After weeks of correction, positions in Asian technology stocks have been partially cleared. Therefore, this rebound appears more like short covering rather than being driven by other factors.”

Goldman Sachs strategists, including Sunil Koul, stated that Friday's rebound aligned with their somewhat positive outlook on certain segments of AI infrastructure, where profits continue to show strong growth. However, they warned that volatility may persist:

“Because although leveraged positions have retreated from highs, they have not been fully cleared.”
