The Financial Times: Jardine Matheson is negotiating with CKH HOLDINGS to acquire its Wellcome supermarkets
According to the Financial Times, citing four informed sources, the British company Jardine Matheson is in talks with CKH HOLDINGS (00001) to acquire its ParknShop supermarket chain, planning to merge it with the Wellcome supermarket under the retail group DFI. The two parties have been in discussions for some time.
In 2023, the two companies together accounted for nearly 90% of the Hong Kong market. However, due to intensified competition and internal assessments, their combined market share after the merger may drop to less than 50%.
CKH HOLDINGS had previously considered selling ParknShop for USD 3 billion to USD 4 billion in 2013, but the deal was shelved as the price did not meet the best interests of shareholders.
