It is estimated that the industry will deliver 44 million units in 2024, increasing to 103 million units in 2025. Additionally, 60% of respondents prefer devices equipped with Microsoft Copilot. Apple maintains its lead in AI computer shipments, mainly due to the widespread use of its M-series chips
According to the latest data from Canalys obtained by Zhitong Finance and Economics APP, in the second quarter of 2024, the shipment volume of personal computers (PC) with artificial intelligence (AI) functionality reached 8.8 million units. Among them, Apple (AAPL.US) Mac accounted for 60%, while Microsoft (MSFT.US) Windows operating system accounted for 39%.
Canalys defines PCs that include "dedicated chipsets or blocks to run AI workloads on the device" as AI-supported PCs. These chipsets include AMD's XDNA, Apple's Neural Engine, Intel's AI Boost, and Qualcomm's Hexagon.
Ishan Dutt, Chief Analyst at Canalys, stated: "The expansion momentum of AI-supported PCs in the second quarter of 2024 has significantly strengthened. In June of this year, PCs featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon X series chips and Arm-based Copilot+ PC were launched."
He added: "In the x86 domain, Intel has increased deliveries of Core Ultra chipsets, reporting continued strong performance of its AI PC products, while AMD announced the Ryzen AI 300 series laptop processors in June, with products set to be released in mid-July."
According to Canalys' forecast, the industry will deliver 44 million AI-enabled PCs by 2024, and by 2025, this number will more than double to reach 103 million units. In addition, survey data shows that about 60% of respondents prefer devices with Microsoft Copilot.
As the entire Mac lineup adopts the M-series chips with Neural Engine, Apple currently holds a leading position in the shipment volume of AI computers. Canalys stated that when Apple Intelligence is widely rolled out in the fall of this year and early 2025, most Mac users will be able to utilize AI functionalities on their devices.
Lenovo accounted for 6% of the AI PC shipment volume in the second quarter, while HP (HPQ.US) held an 8% market share, and Dell (DELL.US) had a market share of approximately 7%.
Dutt stated: "In the second quarter of 2024, the shipment volume of Windows PCs priced above $800 increased by 9% compared to the previous period, while within this price range, the shipment volume of AI-supported PCs grew by 126%."
He further added: "This is particularly important in the next 12 months, as a significant portion of installed computers will be updated as part of the ongoing Windows upgrade cycle."
