According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, Democratic presidential candidate Harris has taken the lead over Republican Trump by one percentage point, narrowing the gap that had widened in the final weeks of President Biden's re-election campaign.
The three-day poll ended last Sunday, showing Harris with the support of 43% of registered voters, while former President Trump received 42% support, within the 3.5 percentage point margin of error. The previous Reuters/Ipsos poll last week showed Harris leading with 44% to 42%.
Furthermore, according to the latest Bloomberg/Morning Consult poll, Harris has erased Trump's lead in swing states; there has been an increase in voting enthusiasm among Black and young voters since Biden dropped out.
After Biden succumbed to increasing pressure within the party and withdrew from the race, Harris has solidified her position among Democratic candidates in the past 10 days. Subsequently, Harris has received a large amount of donations and support.
Overall, voters' views of Harris have become more positive in the past month. The poll found that 46% of voters have a positive view of her, while 51% have a negative view. In comparison, in the Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on July 2, positive ratings were at 40% and negative ratings at 57%.
Trump's positive ratings have remained almost unchanged during this period, with 41% of registered voters having a positive view of him in the latest poll, while 56% have a negative view.
The poll shows that registered voters tend to favor Trump's approach to the economy, immigration, and crime, while they believe Harris has a better plan for healthcare.
This survey was conducted online from July 26 to 28 in English, with 1025 American adults surveyed, including 876 registered voters.
However, the recent turmoil in the past few weeks has made analysts and forecasters cautious about what Harris's candidacy might mean for the November election results.
National polls measure American voters' support for political figures, but to secure enough votes to become president, candidates typically need to rely on fiercely contested swing states like Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, which can shift the balance in the Electoral College.
Harris and her campaign team continue to privately search for potential running mates and may make a decision soon, as Harris is preparing to campaign in these competitive swing states with this individual next week.
The poll shows that those seeking the position have not yet established a broad national recognition.
