Watches can now measure blood sugar! Samsung watches will introduce new metabolism health tracking features, leading the way ahead of Apple
Samsung will introduce a health tracking feature at this week's Galaxy Unpacked event that Apple Watch does not yet have. The new Galaxy watch will track users' Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) index, which can serve as an indicator of metabolic health and biological age. Samsung will also launch an Ultra version aimed at competing with the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 2. While Samsung's phones dominate the global market, they have yet to make progress in the Chinese market. Samsung and Apple have been working for years on developing sensors for sustainable blood sugar tracking. Samsung will unveil a new version of flip and larger foldable models at tomorrow's event in Paris
According to Zhitong Finance APP, Samsung Electronics (SSNLF.US) will introduce a health tracking feature at the Galaxy Unpacked event this Wednesday that Apple (AAPL.US) watches do not yet have. The new Galaxy watch will track users' Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) index, which can serve as an indicator of metabolic health and biological age.
The South Korean tech giant refers to this event as the next frontier of GalaxyAI. In addition to the new foldable phones and Galaxy Ring health tracker, Samsung is also expected to launch an Ultra version aimed at competing with the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 2.
As a high-end product in 2019, Samsung leads in the field of foldable smartphones, but the company has not made progress in the world's largest smartphone market, China.
Research firm Canalys predicts that foldable phone shipments will reach 17.5 million units in 2023, with Samsung holding a 63% market share. It is expected that Samsung will unveil a new version of flip and larger foldable models at tomorrow's event in Paris.
For years, Samsung and Apple have been working on developing sensors for sustainable blood sugar tracking, which is beneficial for diabetes patients. HonPak, Samsung's Mobile Digital Health Director, said, "The AGEs reader has been present in larger hardware, and we are now miniaturizing it, achieving blood sugar measurement through a watch for the first time."
This technology is seen as a step forward in the development of non-invasive continuous blood sugar monitoring devices.
To perform more complex measurements, Samsung has added more colors of LEDs to illuminate blood vessels and obtain the wearer's health information. In addition, the new watch can also measure heart rate during high-intensity exercise, with accuracy improved by 30%.
Ahead of Samsung's event, Apple will make significant upgrades to its Apple Watch lineup to celebrate the device's tenth anniversary. Reports also suggest that the Apple Watch is expected to offer a larger display and new chips, but it is not yet known if the functions for detecting high blood pressure and sleep apnea will be released this year
