Sam Altman's personal wealth has reached at least $2 billion, not including his stake in OpenAI!
Altman's wealth can be largely traced back to a VC fund and some startup investments. With Reddit's initial public offering, his wealth is expected to continue growing as the fund associated with him is one of Reddit's largest shareholders.
The data shows that the personal wealth of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has reached at least $2 billion, and this figure does not include any holdings in OpenAI.
According to media reports, this is the first time his personal wealth has been evaluated. Most of Altman's traceable wealth comes from a VC fund and some startup investments. With Reddit's initial public offering, his wealth is expected to continue growing as funds associated with him are one of Reddit's largest shareholders.
Altman's wealth does not include holdings in OpenAI, which is currently valued at $86 billion. However, Altman has repeatedly stated that he does not own any shares in the company. Altman declined to comment on this matter.
The media indicates that the source of Altman's wealth is relatively opaque. He invests in closely held companies like Musk's Neuralink, which do not disclose his exact holdings, thus not factored into his personal wealth.
Reportedly, most of his traceable net worth comes from a $1.2 billion investment in a series of venture capital funds called Hydrazine Capital. Additionally, he has an additional $434 million in the Apollo Projects fund.
These VC funds own 8.7% of Reddit, which filed for an IPO last week with a fundraising amount potentially reaching $10 billion. This will bring in a substantial return for these funds.
Altman has also invested heavily in two lesser-known startups. In 2021, he led a $500 million investment round in the fusion energy company Helion Energy Inc. and invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences, a company dedicated to extending the average human lifespan by 10 years.
