AppleGPT! Apple is expected to integrate generative AI into iPhone and iPad as early as next year.
Analysts suggest that Apple may integrate cloud artificial intelligence and "edge artificial intelligence", and is likely to introduce generative AI features starting from iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.
Apple GPT is currently at what stage of development?
On October 20th, media reports stated that Jeff Pu, an analyst at Haitong International Securities, believes that Apple plans to integrate generative AI technology into the iPhone and iPad as early as the end of 2024.
In his research report, Pu stated that his supply chain investigation shows that Apple will set up hundreds of AI servers in the next two years to achieve this functionality.
Pu believes that Apple will provide a combination of cloud-based AI and "edge AI," which involves processing data on more devices. Apple is also deciding how to legally and compliantly use customer personal data, so it will take some time before we see "Apple GPT."
However, if the plan progresses as scheduled, Apple's AI may land before the end of 2024, and it is likely to introduce generative AI features starting from iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. It is just unknown how these technologies will be used.
Although it was not until July of this year that the media revealed that Apple had established the Ajax large language model development framework and was secretly developing its own large language model "Apple GPT," Apple's attention to generative AI started much earlier than the outside world imagined.
Four years ago, Apple's AI director, John Giannandrea, authorized the formation of a team to develop conversational AI (i.e., large language models), demonstrating Apple's emphasis on this field.
When ChatGPT was released, Apple's AI team also became "anxious." In order to accelerate the development of LLM, Apple not only significantly increased research funding, burning millions of dollars every day, but also poached many engineers from Google. Apple employees unanimously believe that their Apple GPT large model capabilities have surpassed GPT-3.5.
With such a powerful language model, Apple's range of products will certainly undergo a major upgrade.
In September of this year, media reports stated that Apple plans to integrate large language models into the Siri voice assistant, allowing users to automatically perform complex tasks. This feature will involve deep integration with the Shortcuts application. The feature is expected to be released in the 2024 iPhone software update, making it a significant feature of iOS 18.
However, it is worth mentioning that due to the "cumbersome design" of Siri's construction, Apple may need a considerable amount of time to update the database to support new features. A former engineer stated that rebuilding the Siri database is required every time a new phrase is added, which may take up to six weeks, and adding more complex features such as search tools may take more than a year.Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a media interview:
"We have been committed to generative artificial intelligence for many years and have conducted extensive research. We will take it seriously and think carefully about it because we are fully aware of its potential negative uses and issues such as bias."
